The following takes place between 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM …

9:30 PM – Bob, the shipping manager, checks his work email from home.  Next he takes a few minutes to update his fantasy football line up and download some new MP3s for his iPod.  Over the next 20 minutes, his laptop seems a little slow but he doesn’t think much of it.  He shuts down and calls it a night.

Next Day

8:21 AM – The next day, Bob arrives at the office a few minutes early.  He starts up his laptop and then goes to grab some coffee.

8:35 AM – Bob returns to his desk and tries to check email.  Email seems down so he tries to login to a variety of internal systems and even pulls up his web browser to check the Internet.  No go.  Realizing the network or his computer is having issues, Bob picks up the phone and dials the help desk.  Strangely his new voice over IP phone won’t connect to the help desk extension.

8:38 AM – A large group of employees are crowded in the hall outside the help desk department.  The entire network seems to be down.  Worse still, the automated assembly line systems are down and workers are standing idle.

8:39 AM – The captured data arrives at the final destination.  Somewhere in east Asia an alert pops up on a computer screen.  The hacker grabs another soft drink from the fridge and then opens the file he just received.  A quick scan shows about 10,000 customer accounts, complete with credit card information.  Based on the last transaction, those identities are worth about $25 each on the black market.  Nice.  Suddenly another alert pops up … another score is coming in.
